Currency and cash

There is currently only one option for foreign currency exchange into NZ dollars in Timaru. It’s a locally owned bookstore with NZ Post facilities ‘The Notebook’, 1 Ranui Avenue, Timaru, phone 03 688 9648. Open Monday – Friday 8.30am – 5.30pm, Saturday 9am – 4pm, closed on Sundays and Public Holidays.

T&C apply: There is a minimum amount of $NZD100 and no large amounts can be changed. Please phone before visiting.

Vehicle hire & taxis

Taxis and driver/guide services can be booked at the Visitor Information Centre.

There are four taxi companies in Timaru:

  • Highway Taxis (Taxi service within Timaru district and to surrounding cities up to 400kms radius). Private tours also available  +64 22 101 2344

Taxis can be ordered by phone, or through the Information Centre. Please note Taxi cabs cannot be hailed from the footpath.

Free WiFi is available in locations in Timaru, Temuka and Caroline Bay. This service is free to everyone, with a daily limit of 500MB per device.

Wifi is also available at Timaru District Libraries – Timaru City, Temuka, Geraldine.

Many cafes in Timaru District offer free wifi to customers.

Timaru Public Hospital is a fully serviced hospital with an Emergency Department.

Shopping

The Central Business Districts of Timaru, Geraldine and Temuka are home to the main shopping areas of the towns.

In Timaru you will find a range of locally owned boutique shops and national chain stores. In Temuka and Geraldine there is more of a focus on locally owned shops.

Farmers markets

The Timaru Artisan Farmers Market runs a small market each cruise day at Heritage Place, 2 George Street, directly outside the Timaru Information Centre.
